Major General Lars Sivert Lervik was appointed Lieutenant General and the new Chief of the Norwegian Intelligence Service (Etterretningstjenesten / E-tjenesten) by the Council of State today, 7 August 2026.

Lervik is currently Chief of the Norwegian Army and has extensive leadership experience, including serving as Commander of Brigade North and as Head of the Section for National Security Policy, Crisis Management and Preparedness at the Ministry of Defence.
The position of Chief of the Norwegian Intelligence Service is a six-year fixed-term appointment, following an amendment to the legislation governing military civil servants that entered into force on 1 January 2026.
At 55, Lervik has extensive experience from a range of positions within the Norwegian Army, as well as several deployments on international operations.
Lervik completed his higher education with a Master of Arts in Defence Studies at King’s College London in 2007, followed by studies at the US Army War College in 2017.
Lervik will assume the position from a date to be determined by the Ministry of Defence.
